Exterior Decorative Lighting Guidelines

Following the success of Earth Hour 2009, the Exterior Decorative Lighting Guidelines were created to further improve the carbon footprint of Chicago area buildings. The guidelines also help protect bird migration patterns by reducing light pollution at the appropriate times. |

Exterior decorative lighting includes all non–emergency exterior lighting, including crown and façade lighting, lit signage, street level lighting and tree lighting.
Evening Guidelines:
- Evening lights can power on no earlier than 30–minutes after official sunset.
- Evening lights must power off no later than 10:00 PM Sunday through Thursday, and 11:00 PM on Friday and Saturday.

*Grey cells indicate daylight savings time starts or ends mid–month
Morning Guidelines:
- Due to dawn breaking before the beginning of rush–hour, morning exterior non–emergency lighting should be kept off.
- Buildings with special circumstances may program exterior lighting to turn on no earlier than 5:00 AM and turn off no later than 30–minutes before official sunrise. Morning lights should remain off in May, June and July when dawn breaks at or before 5:00 AM.
Exception:
Evening lights on July 4 and December 31 may remain on until 1:00 AM.
